Blisks with Small Geometry Mistuning and Blend Repair: High-fidelity Modelling, Analysis and Experimental Verification

Blisks extensively used in the fan/compressor sections of advanced aeroengines, are susceptible to excessive blade vibration due to inevitable blade mistuning. Blade mistuning arises primarily from the scatters of blade geometry profiles caused by manufacturing tolerance, in-service wear, blade repairs, etc. The accurate modelling and dynamic analysis of geometrically mistuned blisks has been a long-standing issue in both the academic and industrial communities. There is a recent trend to capture the blade-to-blade geometry variances through precise geometry measurements by a 3D optical scanning system in order to obtain an improved blade geometric mistuning evaluation capability. This presentation focuses on the high-fidelity modeling based on the state-of-the-art 3D optical geometry scanning technology, analysis and experimental verification specifically for blisks with both small geometry mistuning and blend repair (relatively larger geometric variance). A comprehensive vibration evaluation tool is anticipated that can portray the risks and benefits of a damaged blisk undergoing blend repairs. These research efforts align with the digital twin philosophy that the digital representations of the real aeroengine parts, converted from the precise geometry measurement data, enable to evaluate and monitor the products’ performance through the life cycle in an effective way.
Biao Zhou is an associate professor in structural dynamics from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. Currently he is working as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow, in cooperation with Prof. Teresa Berruti from Politecnico di Torino, Italy (May, 2021 ~ April, 2023). He holds a PhD’s degree at Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France (2009-2013).
