===Abstract:===

Non-contact diagnostics have several advantages over traditional discrete sensors such as accelerometers and strain gauges.  For example, measurements can be taken without mass loading the structure.  Generally, full-field, three-dimensional data can be acquired.  Non-contact techniques can also be much quicker to field compared to traditional instrumentation.  Several classes of non-contact diagnostics are fielded by the Sandia National Laboratories Experimental Structural Dynamics Laboratory, including Scanning and Multi-point Laser Vibrometry, High Speed Video and Digital Image Correlation, and even X-ray Imaging to capture motions of internal components of a system.  This talk will give a practical overview of these diagnostics, highlighting the application space where each system is most useful.

===Biography:===

Dan Rohe is a Principal Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories and has worked in the Experimental Structural Dynamics group for the last 8 years.  He is the principal investigator and portfolio manager of a non-contact diagnostics research program, which focuses on fielding optical testing techniques for structural dynamics applications.  He has a wealth of experience testing with laser vibrometry and digital image correlation.  Most recently, he has been working on incorporating radiographic (X-ray) imaging into structural dynamics testing.  It is Dan’s goal to never have to glue on another accelerometer.  Dan has a Master’s degree in Experimental Mechanics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and just recently defended his PhD dissertation in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell.
